Chris Goettl, MD, is a board-certified interventional radiologist in Phoenix, Arizona, certified by the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology. He specializes in musculoskeletal embolization for chronic joint and tendon pain, Y-90 radioembolization for liver cancer, and other minimally invasive, image-guided treatments. He is also CEO of Vascular and Interventional Partners, a physician-owned interventional radiology practice serving patients across Arizona and Nevada.

Musculoskeletal embolization‍
‍
Dr. Goettl performs one of the highest volumes of musculoskeletal (MSK) embolization procedures in the southwestern United States, with more than 400 cases performed. MSK embolization is a catheter-based, outpatient treatment for chronic joint and tendon pain. Conditions he treats include knee osteoarthritis (genicular artery embolization, or GAE), plantar fasciitis, and complex foot, ankle and hand arthritis. Embolization is an option for patients who haven't found relief from injections, physical therapy, or medication and want to avoid, complement, or delay surgery. Dr. Goettl welcomes referrals from orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, podiatrists, rheumatologists, pain specialists, and primary care physicians.

Y-90 radioembolization for liver cancer

Dr. Goettl is an expert in Y-90 transarterial radioembolization (also called TARE or selective internal radiation therapy, SIRT) and helped build one of the largest Y-90 programs in the western United States, with the practice treating more than 500 patients to date. Y-90 delivers radiation directly to tumors in the liver through a small catheter, targeting the tumors while minimizing damage to healthy liver tissue. It is commonly used for hepatocellular carcinoma and for cancers that have spread to the liver, such as colorectal cancer. He works closely with medical oncologists, hepatologists, and surgeons to coordinate each patient's care.

Independent IR practice design and management

Dr. Goettl brings deep experience in building and running independent interventional radiology practices. As CEO of Vascular and Interventional Partners, he leads a physician-owned group of more than 20 providers across 10+ clinical sites in Arizona and Nevada, including hospitals, office-based labs, and outpatient clinics. Founded in 2022, the practice is among the largest independent IR-specific groups in the U.S. He also holds advisory roles with national professional organizations and interventional medical device companies.

Training and background

Dr. Goettl earned a bachelor's degree in pre-medical studies and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, then worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company before medical school. He graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix in 2012 and completed his radiology residency at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he served as chief resident. He completed his Interventional Radiology fellowship at Stanford University in 2018.

Academic and professional roles

Since 2018, Dr. Goettl has practiced interventional radiology in Arizona. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. He also serves as Director of the Interventional Procedural Simulation Program at the college's Center for Simulation and Innovation, where he trains medical students and residents. He is an active member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Outpatient Endovascular and Interventional Society, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American Medical Association.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Goettl enjoys golf, basketball, sandwiches, the outdoors, and time with his wife and children.
